Spring hits different when you're managing a child's reactive skin.

For rainy days: water-resistant outer jacket, organic cotton or cotton-blend, fully unlined. Never put a water-resistant plastic lining against organic cotton for a child with eczema — condensation builds, sweat traps, and the barrier flares within hours. Unlined water-resistant jackets breathe. They cost more, but they prevent days of reactive skin that cost more in stress and medical intervention.
Why this matters: the barrier in transition
Your child's skin barrier is already working overtime managing the shift from winter to spring. Cold winter air dries skin. Sudden humidity creates sweat. These are not small stresses — they're the conditions that trigger flares.
Layering compounds this stress if each layer creates heat buildup or friction. A lined jacket traps heat, sweat builds, and even organic cotton touching wet skin becomes an irritant. Synthetic fabrics that don't breathe force the barrier to push moisture out rather than allowing it to evaporate. Every minute of that stress is a trigger.
The science is straightforward: a healthy barrier regulates moisture and temperature across a functional epidermis. A compromised barrier cannot regulate efficiently. The practical rhythm
Morning: start fully layered. Undyed or light-colored organic cotton base + long-sleeve organic cotton middle + unlined jacket. No tags touching neck or armpits. Seams should lay flat against the middle layer, never against skin.
Midday: remove the outer jacket if temperature climbs. The two layers underneath regulate without trapped heat. If warmth is still too much, the long-sleeve middle layer comes off, leaving just the base. Never go from fully clothed to bare skin — intermediate layers prevent temperature shock to reactive skin. Temperature shock alone can trigger flares; the barrier reacts to sudden cold by constricting, suddenly warm by flushing and sweating. Gradual transitions through layers prevent that cascade.

Rainy days: switch to the unlined water-resistant jacket. Remove it immediately when indoors or when rain stops. Don't leave a water-resistant jacket on dry skin for extended periods — even breathable water-resistant fabrics trap moisture if worn too long.
Seams, overlap, and friction zones
Check every seam where layers overlap. Shoulder seams of the jacket should not sit directly on shoulder seams of the middle layer — rotate the jacket 90 degrees if possible, or choose a jacket with seams offset from standard positions. Armholes are the worst friction zone — when layers stack, armhole seams can rub against skin even if the base layer is pure organic cotton.

The detail that changes everything: tag removal
Check every tag on every piece before dressing. Jacket tags, base layer tags, middle layer tags. All of them come off if they touch the neck, armpits, or any friction zone. Tags are often synthetic, stiff, and designed to withstand dozens of washes without softening. On reactive skin, a tag rubs like sandpaper.
This is non-negotiable. A single tag ignored is a single day of irritation. Over a spring of daily dressing, one tag creates dozens of flare triggers.
