The calculation seems straightforward. A T-shirt at the high-street shop costs £6. The same size and colour from an organic brand costs £22. The difference feels obvious — one is cheap, one is expensive, and the rational choice is to buy three of the cheaper ones.
But "price" and "cost" are not the same thing. What you pay at the register is the price. The cost is everything that follows: the wash cycles, the anxiety about flares, the nights your child wakes up scratching, the money you spend on skin creams and treatments because the flares keep coming back. The cost includes the detergent you use because standard detergent makes the itching worse. It includes the switching — buying more expensive products in an attempt to fix a problem that started with a cheap shirt.
Where the savings actually come from
Non-organic cotton is cheap because the supply chain is engineered for cost at every stage. Not necessarily dishonesty — the industry optimized for price decades ago, and most mainstream children's clothing companies are simply operating within that system without questioning it.
Conventional cotton farming uses synthetic pesticides at higher rates than almost any other crop. These pesticides leave residues in the fibre. During processing, conventional cotton is treated with synthetic dyes, bleaches, and finishing agents designed to make fabric fast-drying, wrinkle-resistant, and visually appealing. These treatments are cheap because they are standardized and chemical-intensive.
The dyes used in conventional children's clothing include azo dyes — a category known to release harmful amines under conditions that include skin contact and sweat. They are used because they are bright, cheap, and standardized. Optical brighteners are added to make whites whiter and colours pop — they cost pennies per garment. Formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resist finishes are applied to reduce ironing. All of these choices save money at manufacture. None of them cost the manufacturer anything at all.
What they cost is shifted downstream: to you, to your child, to the ecosystem. The manufacturer's cost is low. The total cost is very different.
The skin barrier problem
A child's skin is not adult skin in miniature. The stratum corneum — the outermost protective layer — is significantly thinner and more permeable in children than in adults. This is not a defect; it is why children regulate temperature so effectively through their skin. It is also why chemicals that an adult's skin might tolerate are more likely to irritate a child.
When a child wears a garment treated with conventional dyes and finishes, those chemicals are in direct contact with permeable skin for hours at a time. For most children, this causes no obvious problem. The immune system tolerates it. But for children with eczema, contact dermatitis, or simply more reactive skin, those chemicals are a documented irritant.
The irritation is rarely immediate. It builds up over days of wearing the garment, compounded by wash residue and other chemical exposures. By the time a flare starts, the garment has been worn for a week, and the connection between the cheap shirt and the sudden itch is not obvious.
What is obvious is the response: more itching, more scratching, potential for skin barrier breakdown and secondary infection, more medical visits, more creams, more laundry cycles to try to manage it. The £6 shirt has now cost you far more in time, anxiety, and dermatology bills.
The washing trap
Non-organic clothing requires more aggressive management once you own it. The finishes applied during manufacturing are designed to resist washing — that is their purpose. But for children with sensitive skin, those finishes are the problem.
A standard detergent will not remove finish residues effectively. So you switch to "baby detergent" or "sensitive skin detergent," which costs more per wash. You might add an extra rinse cycle, which costs water and electricity. You avoid fabric softener, which costs more money per bottle but is bad for sensitive skin anyway.
And then sometimes it still does not work. The shirt still causes itching. So you either stop wearing it or you escalate further — different detergent, more rinses, separate wash cycles, or accepting that some clothes stay in the drawer.
Organic clothing, by contrast, requires less interventionist care. It does not have wrinkle-resist finishes, so it creases — but it also does not require extra chemical removal. Standard gentle detergent works. A normal rinse cycle is sufficient. The laundry is simpler because the fabric is less chemically burdened to begin with.
The real cost of cheap clothing includes the laundry management tax: the time, energy, and money required to make it tolerable for reactive skin.
The false economy of durability
One argument for cheaper children's clothing is durability. Kids destroy clothes through growth, spills, rough play. Why spend £22 on a shirt they will outgrow in three months?
But durability is not a simple variable. A non-organic shirt might survive 40 washes mechanically — the seams hold, the fabric does not tear. But it becomes less tolerable to reactive skin over those washes as chemical finishes degrade and release, and detergent residues build up in the fibre. By wash 15, it might be causing noticeable itching. By wash 30, your child refuses to wear it.
An organic shirt might be worn intensively for 30-40 washes before an eczema child stops tolerating it, not because the shirt is worse mechanically but because chemical accumulation is slower to begin with. It also handles aggressive washing better — the absence of chemical finishes means hot water and extra rinses do not degrade the fabric quality, so you can actually clean the shirt rather than just rinsing it.
The price per wear is often similar. The difference is that one shirt actually gets worn for its full mechanical lifespan, and the other ends up in the drawer because skin irritation made it intolerable.
The emotional cost
There is an unmeasured cost to wearing clothing that makes your skin feel wrong. Not necessarily medical — you might not develop a visible rash, you might not need treatment. But you are aware, all day, that something is slightly off. It itches. It does not feel right. By afternoon you are adjusting it, scratching at it, uncomfortable.
For a child, this is not a minor irritation. They do not have the emotional regulation to tolerate low-grade discomfort they cannot name. They just know that wearing this shirt makes them want to scratch. So they do. They adjust it constantly. They ask to change clothes. They are uncomfortable through the school day or the afternoon at home.
For a parent, the cost is the knowledge that you are choosing budget over comfort, and the low-level guilt that comes with that choice. You bought the cheap shirt because it was rational, and now your child is uncomfortable. You did not intend to cause discomfort, but you did.
Organic clothing does not eliminate this possibility — sensitive skin is still sensitive. But it reduces the likelihood. It shifts the odds toward comfort. And that shift, over dozens of pieces over years of childhood, changes the texture of daily life.
The real calculation
Cost-benefit analysis works when you count all the costs. The real cost of the £6 shirt is not just what you pay at checkout. It is:
— The extra wash cycles and specialty detergent required to manage it
— The dermatology visits if sensitivity causes flares
— The creams and treatments for managing those flares
— The shirts not worn because they cause itching
— The moments of discomfort that add up to a child's difficult day
— The laundry time thinking about whether this shirt might be the trigger
The £22 organic shirt costs more at purchase. It costs less in everything that follows.
The choice is not really cheap versus expensive. It is optimizing for what you pay at register versus optimizing for total cost of ownership. Once you count all the costs, the decision becomes much clearer.
Your child deserves to wear clothing that does not make them itch. You deserve to not manage that itching. The right clothes are the ones that actually fit into your life without adding friction — and that is worth more than the difference in price.
