You are standing in a shop, or reading a product page, and somewhere on the label are the letters GOTS, or OEKO-TEX, or possibly both. The item costs more than the version without those letters. You are being asked to trust that the certification means something — but what, exactly? And does it actually matter for skin that is sensitive, reactive, or prone to eczema?

These are not rhetorical questions. The certifications are real, they measure different things, and they have different implications for what ends up against your skin. Understanding what each one covers — and what it does not — puts you in a position to make a reasoned choice rather than a marketing-driven one.

What GOTS certifies

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It is a certification that covers the entire production chain of a textile — from the growing of the raw fibre through the processing, dyeing, finishing, and manufacturing stages, all the way to labelling. For a fabric to carry the GOTS label, the organic certification of the fibre itself is a baseline requirement: the cotton, wool, or other natural fibre must have been grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, verified by a recognised organic agricultural standard such as USDA Organic or EU Organic.

But GOTS goes considerably further than the field. The processing standards are where the certification does much of its work for people with sensitive skin. Bleaching, for example, must be done with oxygen-based compounds — no chlorine bleaches. Dyestuffs must meet strict criteria for toxicological safety; azo dyes that can break down into certain aromatic amines — compounds with known skin-sensitising potential — are prohibited. Formaldehyde, used in many textile finishing processes to reduce wrinkling or shrinkage, is banned above trace levels. So are heavy metals, allergenic disperse dyes, and most synthetic surfactants in wet processing.

The list is long because textile processing is a long chain, and there are many points at which chemicals enter the fabric. GOTS attempts to control all of them. A garment that carries the GOTS label has been processed without the majority of the finishing agents and dyestuffs that most commonly contribute to skin reactions in people with chemical sensitivities or compromised skin barriers.

The important limitation: GOTS applies only to textiles made primarily from natural fibres. It cannot be applied to purely synthetic fabric. And it is a process certification — it tells you how the textile was made, not what the final fabric composition is in detail.

What OEKO-TEX certifies

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a different kind of certification. It does not certify a production process — it certifies the final product. A textile carrying the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label has been tested by an independent laboratory for the presence of a defined list of harmful substances in the finished fabric. The fabric is tested as it arrives, ready to be worn.

The test list is extensive — over one hundred substances — and includes pesticide residues, heavy metals, formaldehyde, pH value, colourfastness, and a range of chemical compounds with known skin-sensitising or toxic properties. The allowed limits are tiered by product class: stricter for items classified as Class I (products for babies and children), less strict for Class II (items in close contact with skin, such as underwear and bedding), and less strict still for Class III (outer clothing) and Class IV (furnishing fabrics).

For adult clothing in sustained contact with skin — underwear, t-shirts, nightwear — Class II limits apply. These are tighter than general textile industry standards, but not as tight as Class I. This distinction is worth holding in your mind when you are evaluating an OEKO-TEX label on something that spends the day or night against reactive skin.

The important limitation of OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is that it makes no claim about how the product was made. A fabric can pass OEKO-TEX testing and still have been produced using synthetic pesticides in the growing stage, chlorine bleaching in the processing stage, and questionable labour practices throughout — as long as the chemical residues in the final fabric fall within the tested limits. OEKO-TEX is about the end product, not the process.

Why the difference matters in practice

The practical implication is that GOTS and OEKO-TEX are measuring different things, and neither one entirely contains the other.

GOTS gives you process assurance: the fabric was made in a way that systematically avoided the chemical inputs most likely to leave residue. But GOTS does not test the final product — it audits the process. A GOTS-certified textile should have very low chemical residue, because the process restricted inputs aggressively. But the certification rests on process auditing rather than final product testing.

OEKO-TEX gives you product assurance: what is in the fabric, as measured, is below the thresholds for the listed harmful substances. But you know nothing from the label about how the fabric was produced, what was used in the fields, or what the supply chain looked like before the point at which the final product was tested.

For sensitive skin, the most relevant question is chemical load in the finished fabric — because that is what your skin is actually in contact with. OEKO-TEX Standard 100, in this narrow sense, gives you the most direct answer to that question. A fabric that has passed its testing at Class II limits has been independently verified to contain the tested substances at or below specified thresholds.

GOTS, by contrast, provides stronger confidence that chemicals known to cause issues were excluded from the process in the first place — which is a reasonable predictor of low residue, even without final product testing. It also covers a much broader range of environmental and social criteria that OEKO-TEX Standard 100 does not address at all.

The case for products carrying both

Some textiles — particularly in the better end of the organic clothing market — carry both certifications. These products have been made according to the process restrictions of GOTS and then tested in the finished state for the substance list that OEKO-TEX Standard 100 requires. For people with highly reactive skin, this combination is the strongest available signal that a fabric has been produced cleanly and tested clean.

It is not a guarantee. No certification eliminates all possible contact triggers — lanolin in wool, natural latex residues, certain plant-derived dyes, and individual idiosyncratic reactions to otherwise low-risk compounds are not captured by either standard. But for the common category of reactions to synthetic finishing agents, residual pesticides, formaldehyde, and allergenic dye compounds — the reactions that are most prevalent in people with sensitive skin and most directly attributable to fabric chemistry — GOTS and OEKO-TEX between them cover the most significant sources.

Reading the label more carefully

One detail worth knowing: OEKO-TEX is a family of standards, not a single certification. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the product testing standard described above. OEKO-TEX LEATHER STANDARD, OEKO-TEX STeP, and OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN are separate certifications covering different aspects. MADE IN GREEN, for instance, combines product testing (Standard 100) with a process assessment (STeP), making it closer in scope to GOTS — though with different specific requirements. When you see "OEKO-TEX" on a label, it is worth checking which specific standard is being claimed.

Similarly, GOTS certification can appear as "organic" or "made with organic" — the first requires at least ninety-five percent certified organic fibre content, the second requires at least seventy percent. The remaining percentage in the "made with organic" category can be non-organic, though it must still meet the GOTS processing requirements for that portion. For a fabric you are buying specifically for its organic content, it is worth knowing which label applies.

What this actually changes about how you shop

For most people with sensitive skin, the certifications are useful as a shorthand for a class of product that is likely to be lower in the specific chemical residues that most commonly drive fabric-related reactions. They are not a guarantee, and they are not a substitute for paying attention to how your own skin responds to a specific fabric over time.

The most honest framing is this: a fabric carrying GOTS certification, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at Class II, or ideally both, has cleared more of the relevant chemical hurdles than uncertified fabric. For skin that reacts to things that should not, in principle, be irritating — that reacts to garments that feel soft, laundered with gentle products, and worn carefully — the chemical history of the fabric itself is often the variable that explains the reaction. Certifications reduce, though they do not eliminate, the likelihood that variable is the one at work.

That is not a small thing. For skin that is genuinely reactive, reducing avoidable uncertainty is exactly the kind of practical step that makes daily dressing less effortful — which is what better fabric choices are ultimately for.
