There is a moment most people with sensitive skin know well. You pull on a new item of clothing — one that looked soft, felt fine in the shop — and within an hour you're tugging at the collar, adjusting a seam, scratching your forearm. By the afternoon you've quietly decided not to wear it again.

It does not always mean the garment was cheap. It means something in it — a fibre, a finish, a dye process — did not agree with your skin. And the frustrating part is that most labels tell you nothing useful about why.

We built Cotton Cuddle because we were tired of that frustration ourselves. And part of what that means, practically, is being willing to be specific about what is actually in our fabrics — not just saying "natural" or "gentle" and hoping you trust us.

The base fabric: 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton

Everything we make starts with certified organic cotton. Not "cotton-rich." Not a cotton-polyester blend with organic cotton in the name. One hundred percent.

Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in agriculture. Pesticide residues, synthetic fertilisers, and the finishing agents applied during processing mean that a standard cotton garment may carry a chemical load that has nothing to do with the fibre itself — and everything to do with how it was grown and treated.

Organic cotton certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) requires that the fibre is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, and that every step of processing — spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing — meets strict limits on the chemicals permitted. The certification covers the whole supply chain, not just the farm. That distinction matters.

For sensitive skin, the difference is meaningful. Pesticide and processing chemical residues are a documented trigger for contact dermatitis and skin irritation. Reducing that chemical load at the fabric level reduces one of the most consistent hidden irritants in everyday clothing.

Dyes: low-impact, OEKO-TEX certified

Undyed fabric is the gentlest option for reactive skin, but it is not practical for an entire wardrobe. So we made careful choices about how our fabrics are coloured.

We use low-impact reactive dyes certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — a testing standard that screens for harmful substances including known allergens, carcinogens, and skin sensitisers. Every batch is tested, not assumed.

What we avoid: azo dyes (a class of synthetic dyes associated with skin and contact sensitisation in people with eczema and reactive skin), optical brighteners (common in many "white" fabrics and laundry products — they make fabric look brighter under UV light and are a frequent cause of skin reactions), and fragrance compounds added to the fabric itself during finishing.

Low-impact dyes also require less water and produce less effluent during dyeing. The environmental reason and the skin-safety reason point in the same direction here.

Weave and weight: chosen for breathability, not appearance

The way a fabric is woven or knitted determines how it behaves against skin more than most people realise. Thread count, fibre diameter, weave density — these are not just quality signals, they are skin-comfort variables.

Our cotton uses a single jersey or muslin construction depending on the garment type. Both prioritise breathability — the ability of the fabric to let air circulate and moisture evaporate — over a dense, smooth surface appearance.

Tightly woven fabrics trap heat and moisture against the skin. For sensitive skin that already struggles with thermoregulation, this creates a warm, damp microenvironment that increases histamine response and itch. A more open weave lets heat and moisture escape. The tradeoff is that the fabric looks less "premium" in photography. We think that is the right tradeoff to make.

Fabric weight is lighter than comparable items in mainstream fashion for the same reason. Lighter fabric moves heat away from the skin faster. It also creates less mechanical pressure — less weight pushing the fabric against the body across a full day's wear.

Seams, labels, and finishing: the details most brands overlook

A fabric can be perfectly selected and poorly constructed. The point where seams sit against skin, the way a label is attached, the stitching used at cuffs and hems — these are the details that cause daily discomfort for people with eczema or reactive skin even in otherwise well-chosen garments.

We use flatlock seaming on high-contact areas — underarms, side seams, wherever the garment moves most against skin throughout the day. Flatlock seams lie flat rather than creating a raised ridge, which means no seam edge pressing into skin during movement.

Labels are printed directly onto the fabric or attached on the outer hem rather than at the neck. A scratchy label at the back of the collar is one of those deceptively simple irritants that compounds over a full day in ways that seem disproportionate until you remove it and immediately feel better.

No formaldehyde-based wrinkle resist treatments. No anti-static chemical sprays. No fabric softener finishing. These treatments reduce care effort — fewer wrinkles, less static — but they remain in fabric through many washes and are a consistent source of contact irritation for people with sensitive skin. We decided they are not worth it.

What we are still working on

Transparency means being honest about what we have not yet solved.

Elastication is a persistent challenge. The elastic components in waistbands, cuffs, and fastenings cannot currently be 100% natural — they require synthetic components to function. We use the most minimal quantity possible and position elastic away from direct skin contact wherever the design allows it. But it is not perfect, and we know it.

Full supply chain traceability to the farm level is certified and documented for our primary fabric lines. For some ancillary components — zips, buttons, thread — certification is at the OEKO-TEX standard but not GOTS. We are working toward closing that gap, but we would rather tell you it exists than imply it does not.

Why this level of specificity matters

The word "natural" has been stretched to the point of meaninglessness in clothing marketing. So has "gentle," "hypoallergenic," and increasingly "organic." None of those words, alone, tells you anything reliable about what your skin will actually encounter when you wear the garment.

What tells you something reliable is specifics: which standard, which dye class, which construction method, which finishing treatments, and which components are still not where we want them to be.

We make these choices because they reduce the most common triggers for sensitive skin. And we talk about them in this detail because that is the only way for you to evaluate whether what we are saying is actually true.

Your skin is good at noticing when something is wrong. We would like our clothing to be the thing that finally does not give it a reason to.
