You probably noticed it before you consciously registered the season had changed. The air felt different one morning — cooler, slightly drier — and by afternoon you were back to warm again. You put on a jumper, took it off, pulled it on again. That evening, the skin on your forearms was reactive in a way it had not been all summer. Nothing had changed, except the weather had. And for sensitive skin, that is more than enough.
Autumn is one of the harder seasonal transitions for skin that flares easily. Spring has a version of this too, but the autumn shift tends to be more abrupt: the air cools, indoor heating starts running again, and the fabrics you naturally reach for — heavier knits, fleece-lined things, layered combinations — bring their own friction and heat-trapping. Understanding what is actually changing at the skin surface makes it easier to dress in a way that keeps irritation quiet through the transition.
What the Cooler Air Actually Does
As temperatures drop, relative humidity tends to fall with them. Cool air holds less moisture than warm air, and once heating systems switch on indoors, the effect is magnified — heated air becomes even drier. For skin with a compromised barrier (which is common in eczema and general sensitivity), this dryness is a direct stressor. The outer skin layer loses moisture faster than it can replace it, and the barrier becomes less effective at keeping out external irritants.
The result is not always a dramatic flare. It can be subtle at first: skin that feels slightly tighter in the morning, a faint roughness at the elbows, an itch behind the knees that you only notice when you sit still. These are early signals. The transition period — the weeks where temperature swings between 10°C and 20°C in a single day — tends to be the worst of it. Once the season settles, skin usually adapts. It is the instability that causes the most disruption.
The Layering Problem
The natural response to unpredictable autumn weather is layering, and layering is generally the right idea for sensitive skin. The problem is how most people do it. A scratchy wool base layer under a shirt, or a fleece mid-layer worn directly against the skin, introduces exactly the mechanical friction and heat trapping that trigger flares. The inner layer — the one your skin actually touches — matters more than anything else in the stack.
If you run warm or your skin tends to flush and itch when you overheat, the goal in autumn is to stay warm without trapping heat. Natural fibres that breathe — organic cotton, TENCEL, fine merino if your skin tolerates it — manage this better than synthetics. A thin, breathable base layer lets you regulate temperature by adding or removing outer layers without the inner layer ever becoming a source of irritation itself.
The other layering issue is seams and fabric edges. When you layer two garments, the seam lines of the inner one press into the skin under the weight and tension of the outer one. Seam-forward stitching that sits flat in everyday wear can become genuinely uncomfortable when compressed for hours. This is worth factoring in when choosing what goes closest to your body as the layers get thicker.
Indoor Heating and What It Means for What You Wear
Heated indoor spaces in autumn present a different problem than the cold outside. You dress for the commute, the outdoor exposure, the cool office at 9am — and then you sit at a desk under a vent for five hours and overheat without quite realising it. For sensitive skin, sustained warmth with no airflow is a reliable flare trigger. Sweat that cannot evaporate, fabric that holds heat against the skin, elastic waistbands that become uncomfortably tight as your core temperature rises — all of these compound over the course of a day.
The practical adjustment is to dress slightly lighter than you think you need to, with a mid-layer you can remove easily. A loose cardigan or open-front layer over a breathable base garment is more skin-friendly than a single heavier garment you cannot take off without changing completely. The ability to regulate temperature during the day is worth more than any single fabric choice.
Fabrics Worth Returning To — and Some Worth Avoiding
Autumn tends to bring heavier textures back into circulation: boiled wool, brushed cotton, fleece, ribbed knits. Some of these are genuinely skin-friendly; others cause problems that are easy to attribute to the season when the fabric is the actual trigger.
Organic cotton in heavier weights — thicker jersey, brushed flannel, dense interlock — is usually well tolerated. The texture is softer and more consistent than conventional cotton, and the absence of chemical residues from conventional growing reduces the irritant load at the skin surface. For the base layer closest to your skin, this is the straightforward choice.
Fleece worn directly against skin is worth avoiding if your skin is reactive. It traps heat effectively but does not breathe, creates surface friction, and tends to cause static — static pulls fibres against the skin in ways that amplify irritation. If you like the warmth of fleece, wear it as a mid or outer layer, never as the layer touching your skin.
Rougher wool blends, particularly anything marketed as "rustic" or with a coarse hand feel, should be treated the same way. Even fine merino causes reactions in some sensitive skin, but the coarser conventional wools are a common autumn trigger that is easy to overlook because people associate their flares with the weather rather than the jumper they just pulled out of storage.
The Transition Takes a Few Weeks
The most useful thing to know about autumn and sensitive skin is that the difficult period has an end. The transition weeks — when neither your skin nor your wardrobe has adapted to the new conditions — are the hardest. Once indoor humidity stabilises, your moisturiser routine catches up with the drier air, and you have settled on a base layer and mid-layer combination that works, things quiet down again.
The main lever in that process is the layer your skin actually touches. Get that right — breathable, soft, free from rough finishes and residues — and the rest of the stack can do what it needs to do.
